Richard Smallwood, Gospel Legend, Passes Away at 77


Richard Smallwood, the Grammy-nominated gospel singer, composer, and pianist whose music helped define contemporary gospel, has passed away at the age of 77. Smallwood died on December 30, 2025, from complications related to kidney failure at a care facility in Maryland, his representatives confirmed.


A classically trained musician and Howard University alumnus, Smallwood’s career spanned more than five decades. He founded the influential Richard Smallwood Singers in 1977 and later led the choir Vision, producing timeless gospel classics such as “Total Praise,” “I Love the Lord,” and “Center of My Joy.” His work earned him multiple Dove and Stellar Awards, eight Grammy nominations, and a place in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Smallwood’s music crossed cultural boundaries, with songs covered by major artists including Whitney Houston and Destiny’s Child. Known for blending traditional gospel with classical and contemporary influences, his compositions became staples in churches and on gospel stages worldwide.
